How to Deal with Burnout (for Website/Game Devs)

Description: This post is meant to be a guide for people who are experiencing burnout in the field of coding.

What is Burnout

Welp, this was a long time coming. So today let’s talk about burnout and how to deal with it. I have experienced burnout a few times before in my life due to the currently growing list of responsibilities that come with having a job and going to school. That said, you can experience burnout from a lot of things in life. from a video game you like to family affairs, to even just doing something you really enjoy. This post is essentially my guide to dealing with burnout.

On a side note, I am not a physiatrist, and I don’t have a lot of knowledge on how the human brain works, let alone your brain. So please, take my advice with a grain of salt, this is just me sharing my knowledge on the subject. If you are experiencing a lot of burnout and have tried everything, even stuff on this post, then PLEASE, see someone in the real world!!!

Step 1: Identify the Problem

The first thing you need to do before any of the other steps is find out what’s causing the burnout. Look back on what you’ve been doing throughout the time that you might have developed burnout. Ask yourself how long you’ve been doing said thing and what it is about it that’s driving you crazy. After that, you can move on to the next steps. Just make sure you don’t skip this step since it’s really important.

Step 2: Step Away from It

Sometimes it’s just better to walk away from something than to continue it extremely tired. This may sound wrong but trust me, whatever you’re doing is not worth the mental stress it’s putting you through. Instead, you might want to try doing something else to pass the time or work on something in the meantime. Burnout can eat at you and can make you feel like you have to complete something or you’ll die, but that isn’t the case. Which brings us to the next part…

Step 3: Do Something Else

The best thing to do after the first 2 steps is to try doing something else to pass the time. Try playing a video game, watching a funny video, spending time with people, or just try vegging out for a while. Now listen closely because this is one of the most important parts of dealing with burnout. Ready for it now? The most important thing to step 3, and the thing that will keep you sane is…

DO NOT IMMEDIATELY GO BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE OR GO ON TO SOCIAL MEDIA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! Not a lot of people tell you this but these two things can either throw you right back into burnout or can make you depressed which is way worse!!! The whole point of this last step is to make sure you don’t get tired again, so don’t do things that will throw you back into the fire!!!

Conclusion

In the end, burnout is real and it is a problem, this is especially a problem in the coding community. Millions of people experience it every year. Over 89% of America to be exact, that’s way too many people. hopefully, this will help you like it has with me. But for now, that’s all I got. Again, if your burnout persists, you may want to see a professional. Hope you have a great day, and if you want to learn more about burnout, here’s a video.
